Ernst Haeckel, 1904
Fossil blastoids drawn with Haeckel's careful eye, pale yellow and grey forms set against deep black.

This plate comes from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur and gathers blastoids, a group of fossil marine animals, on a black ground. Their small, bud-like calyces are drawn in yellow and grey, some seen from above and others from the side. Seen from above, the forms open into star-like and petal-like patterns, which gives the plate a botanical air even though the subjects are animals. The varied views let you compare how the shapes are built and how they differ from one another.
On your wall: The dark ground and muted yellow and grey tones suit a study, library or hallway, and sit well beside other botanical or natural history prints.
