This plate from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, plate 68 (Batrachia), 1904, shows the frog Leptodactylus lineatus, described by Schneider in 1799. The original description calls it the military frog of Surinam, because the female carries her young on her back in military rank. Between twelve and twenty small tadpoles attach themselves to two ridges running either side of her central line, holding on with their oral suction plates. Their mobile, rudder-like tails turn outward, to the left and to the right in a symmetrical pattern.
On your wall: Its natural-history subject suits a study, library, hallway or sitting room, especially alongside other botanical and zoological prints.
