About this artwork

This botanical watercolour shows Alyogyne hakeifolia, a shrub with pink flowers and slender, needle-like leaves. Along the bottom, Ferdinand Bauer has set out dissected parts of the flower, together with the fruit and seed, so the plant can be studied closely as well as admired. The painting is based on one of his own drawings, made from material collected in May 1803 at Goose Island Bay, Western Australia, which was then recorded under the name Hibiscus filiformis. Bauer was an Austrian botanical illustrator who travelled with Matthew Flinders' expedition to Australia.

On your wall: The soft pink bloom and fine botanical detail suit a study, hallway, bedroom or reading corner, especially in calm, light interiors that welcome natural subjects.
