This is plate 286 from Audubon's Birds of America, a hand-coloured print of the White-fronted Goose. It shows a male and a female together on a muddy bank, with grasses around them and shells scattered in the foreground. Audubon's plates were engraved in Scotland and England for the large-format book, which was issued between 1827 and 1838 as part of his plan to record all the bird species of North America. Here the pairing of the two geese and the details of the shoreline give the scene a calm, natural feel.
On your wall: With its natural subject and the grasses and shore around the geese, it suits a study, hallway, living room or country-style interior where nature themes are welcome.
