About this artwork

This is Plate 204 from John James Audubon's The Birds of America, showing the salt water marsh hen, now known as the clapper rail. Two birds stand on a log among marsh grass, hand-coloured and set on the full sheet of paper. The plate belongs to Audubon's ambition to make a complete pictorial record of North America's birds. The Birds of America was published between 1827 and 1838, with its large-format colour plates engraved in Scotland and England.

On your wall: Its soft marsh setting and natural subject suit a study, hallway or sitting room, and sit well alongside other botanical and nature prints.
