This is plate 91 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, produced between 1899 and 1904. It shows Spumellaria, a group of radiolarians, arranged on the page as in the original book. Haeckel was a zoologist, naturalist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species. Here that scientific eye meets a keen sense of pattern and structure. The image keeps the look of the printed page, with its margins, header text and caption, so it feels like a leaf taken from a naturalist's volume.
