This hand-coloured engraving by Ferdinand Bauer, dated 1786, shows a leafy stem bearing white, globular flower heads. Alongside the whole plant, the plate gives dissected floral parts, so the eye can move from the overall form of the plant to the small structures of the flower. The plant is named in the inscription as Gomphrena brasiliensis, a name now treated as Alternanthera brasiliana. Bauer was an Austrian botanical illustrator, and the plate reflects the clear, observational approach of his botanical work.
On your wall: Its white blooms and fresh foliage suit a study, hallway, kitchen or quiet bedroom, particularly alongside other botanical prints in a calm, natural scheme.
