This is Plate 13 from Ferdinand Bauer's Illustrationes Florae Novae Hollandiae, and its subject is Doryanthes excelsa, the Gymea lily. The plate is hand-coloured. It shows the plant's large pinkish-red flower head alongside its green leaves, and carries an inscription giving the plant's name together with a reference to Brown's Prodromus. Bauer was an Austrian botanical illustrator who travelled on Matthew Flinders' expedition to Australia. The clear presentation makes the plant easy to study, and the warm red of the bloom stands out against the fresh green foliage.
On your wall: The warm pink-red bloom and green leaves suit a study, hallway, kitchen or sitting room, especially where botanical prints or natural, understated colours are already at home.
