This is Plate 36 from The North American Sylva, an engraving of the shellbark hickory, Carya tomentosa. A single branch fills the page, carrying its leaves and catkins, with a nut and its husk shown alongside. The print is hand-coloured, and the caption beneath names the tree as Shell bark Hickory, using the older name Juglans squamosa. Pancrace Bessa was a French natural history artist known for his botanical illustrations, and his careful, delicate approach suits a subject where every part of the plant is set out clearly for the eye.
On your wall: Its natural greens and the clear botanical subject suit studies, hallways, kitchens and living rooms where a calm, traditional touch of nature is welcome.
