About this artwork
This is a hand-coloured botanical engraving of Kalmia latifolia, the mountain laurel. It shows a flowering branch, with a separate detail of the seed capsule so the plant can be studied in full. The plate is numbered 68 and carries the inscriptions 'Bessa del.' and 'Gabriel sculp.', crediting Pancrace Bessa as the draughtsman and Gabriel as the engraver. It comes from The North American Sylva, a work on trees and shrubs. Bessa was a French natural history artist known for the delicacy of his botanical illustrations.
On your wall: Its natural subject and fine detail suit a study, hallway, dining room or bedroom, and it sits well alongside other botanical prints in a calm, traditional or country-style interior.
