Basilius Besler, 1613

This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, the florilegium by Basilius Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist. It is a hand-coloured botanical engraving showing four anemone plants. Their flowers are red, yellow and pink-white, and each plant is drawn with its bulb and roots, so you see the whole plant rather than the bloom alone. Every plant carries a label in Latin script. The page belongs to the 'Fürstenausgabe' (princes' edition) of the book, from the first volume.
On your wall: With its clear colours and careful botanical detail, it suits a study, hallway, dining room or reading corner, especially where a quiet touch of nature is welcome.
