This plate, titled 'American Bog-Plants', comes from The Temple of Flora, or Garden of Nature, a book of picturesque botanical plates with descriptions by Robert John Thornton. Philip Reinagle painted the design, and Thomas Sutherland engraved it. It was printed in 1806 and published the following year. The plate shows a pitcher plant, a Venus's fly trap and an arum-like flower, set against hills rather than a plain background. The colour was applied by hand, and the page margins and captions are visible around the scene.
On your wall: Its botanical subject and landscape setting suit a study, hallway, kitchen or reading corner, particularly where a quiet, nature-minded look is wanted.
