This is a plate titled Teleostei, the German Knochenfische, which means bony fishes. It was made by Ernst Haeckel in 1904 and belongs to his Kunstformen der Natur, a series of natural history plates. The original is a colour photomechanical print, a sheet measuring 36 by 26 cm. Haeckel was a German zoologist and marine biologist who also worked as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species. Here, that scientific outlook is turned to the subject of fishes, presented as a carefully composed study.
On your wall: Well suited to a study, hallway or sitting room where a natural history print is welcome, and it sits comfortably alongside botanical pieces.
