About this artwork

Yun Shouping, who came from Piling (modern Changzhou) in Jiangsu, a centre of flower, plant and insect painting, made this hanging scroll in ink and colour on silk. The peony was known as the king of flowers, and under the Qing dynasty it and the spring garden took on new meanings. Here the blooms look somewhat withered and pale, with faint reddish veins running through broken branches, which may carry a coded message. Yun's inscription praises an old Northern Song painting of five kinds of flowers in the boneless manner, admiring its colours and composition. Through it, he turns the flower into a symbol of a glorious past.

On your wall: Its soft, pale tones and delicate flowers suit a calm study, a bedroom or a quiet hallway, especially where a restrained, contemplative mood is wanted.
