Painted in oil in 1858, this view shows Masada, the flat-topped rock, lit a warm orange by the evening sun. To the left, the Dead Sea stretches away towards distant hills. Edward Lear is best known as a writer of nonsense verse and limericks, but he was also an English artist and illustrator, and this landscape shows that side of his work. The painting is held by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and is displayed at the Legion of Honor.
On your wall: Its glowing oranges and open landscape suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where warm, earthy colours are already part of the scheme.

Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet. He is remembered above all for his literary nonsense, in both verse and prose, and especially for his limericks. He did much to popularise the form, though he never actually used that word for it. His playful writing sits alongside his work as an artist.
