Hunhar II, 1765
Young women gather by a river at the forest's edge, beneath a fruiting mango tree, as rain clouds drift in over the land.

Hunhar II painted this scene of young women at play beside the water, in gum tempera and gold on paper, around 1765. It comes from eighteenth-century Mughal India, from Murshidabad or Lucknow. In Indian art, women, water and fruiting trees such as the mango often suggest prosperity and abundance, and approaching rain clouds promise to nourish the land. On the banks, pairs of women sample perfumes, while bowls made from leaves seem to hold jasmine flowers for the hair. One woman smokes a hookah and watches two companions frolic in the stream. Far in the distance, the white marble buildings of a palace are only faintly suggested.
On your wall: Its gentle subject of blossoms, trees and water suits a calm living room, a bedroom or a reading corner where a quiet, decorative note is welcome.
