About this artwork

This hanging scroll, possibly by Sesshū Tōyō, shows sweet osmanthus and hibiscus in an autumn scene, painted in ink and colour on silk. It was once one of a triptych, flanking a central scroll with an ink landscape, and has a companion showing summer daylilies and gardenias. Because the compositions are unbalanced, they may have been taken from larger paintings. Sesshū's work was so highly valued that displaying such fragments in the alcove of a luxurious room would not have been unusual. It dates from the mid-1400s to early 1500s.

On your wall: Its autumn flowers and soft silk-painted subject suit calm spaces such as a study, bedroom or hallway, especially alongside natural materials and muted colours.

About Sesshū Tōyō

Sesshū Tōyō was a Japanese Zen monk and painter, regarded as a great master of ink painting. Chinese landscapes first inspired him, yet his work developed a distinctly Japanese character that reflects Zen Buddhist aesthetics. He painted landscapes, portraits, birds and flowers, often using flattened perspective and strong, emphatic lines.
