Odilon Redon painted this still life with flowers in 1905, working in oil on canvas in France. He was a French artist, born in 1840, who lived until 1916, and the work is usually placed within Post-Impressionism. The title tells us the subject: a arrangement of flowers, the kind of everyday subject that painters have long used to explore colour and form. Today the painting belongs to the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: A floral subject like this suits living rooms, dining areas, hallways and bedrooms, wherever you would like a touch of the garden indoors.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
