Fernand Léger, 1927
Léger turns a still life of fruit into flat, bold shapes, with rounded forms and curling tendrils set against bands of yellow, maroon and black.

Painted in 1927, Les Fruits is a still life in oil on canvas by Fernand Léger. Rather than modelling the fruit with soft shading, he reduces it to flat, geometric forms: white rounded shapes, leaves and tendrils sit alongside bottle-like bands in yellow, maroon, black and cream. The result is clear and graphic, and the eye moves easily from one shape to the next. Léger signed and dated the front at lower right, and signed and dated it again on the reverse, where he also inscribed 'Nature-morte'.
On your wall: Its yellow, maroon, black and cream palette and crisp, graphic shapes suit a modern dining room, kitchen, hallway or study, especially with simple, uncluttered furnishings.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
