Marsden Hartley's Sky is an abstract oil painting on canvas, dated around 1914–15. Its yellow ground carries sun-like discs, sharp zigzags and a red equestrian statue, and the German word 'Himmel' is painted into the composition. A painted border frames it all, which gives the busy arrangement a clear edge. Hartley was an American Modernist who developed his painting by studying Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin. The work is held at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its bright yellows and reds suit lively spaces such as a living room, studio or hallway, where a bold abstract piece can set the tone.

Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist who worked as a painter, poet and essayist. He developed his skills as a painter by studying the work of Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin, and that experience shaped his approach to the canvas. His writing sat alongside his painting as part of a wide-ranging creative life.
