Marsden Hartley painted American Indian Symbols in 1914, working in oil on canvas. It is now in the Amon Carter Museum. The title suggests a composition built from symbols rather than a conventional scene, which fits the Modern and abstract spirit of the piece. Hartley was an American Modernist painter, poet and essayist, and he developed his painting by looking closely at Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin. Seen in that light, this work invites you to read its forms slowly and make your own connections between them.
On your wall: Its abstract, symbol-led character suits modern living rooms, studies and hallways where a considered, graphic piece can anchor the space and invite a second look.
