About this artwork

Jahrmarkt, German for fairground, is a painting by Raoul Dufy from 1906. Dufy was a French painter linked with the Fauvist movement, and he became known for a vibrant, decorative style. Scenes of outdoor social gatherings are what he is remembered for most, so a fair is a fitting subject for him. The painting is part of the Sammlung E.G. Bührle. Beyond painting, Dufy worked in textile design, printmaking, book illustration and scenic design, and that love of pattern and colour is part of what makes his work so recognisable.

On your wall: A fairground scene by a colourist like Dufy suits living rooms, dining areas and hallways where you want some movement and cheer, especially in modern, uncluttered interiors.
