Painted in oil on canvas in 1913, this is one of the "improvisations" Kandinsky made between 1910 and 1914, works he described as spontaneous, unconscious expressions. He saw painting and music as parallel routes to abstraction, freeing colour and line from the job of depicting things. The title mentions cannons, and Kandinsky told his friend Arthur Jerome Eddy, a Chicago collector, that the constant talk of war during the year might explain them. For him, though, the true content lay in what a viewer experiences while under the influence of the forms and colour combinations. It is a picture to spend time with and respond to in your own way.
On your wall: Its abstract energy suits living rooms, studies and other spaces where a modern, expressive piece can start conversation and reward a longer look.

Vasily Kandinsky, also spelled Wassily, was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
