Juan Gris, 1913
A violin and a hand of playing cards on a table, broken into the angles and planes of Cubism. A familiar still life, seen in a new way.

Juan Gris painted this still life in 1913, working in oil on canvas. The subject is a violin and playing cards resting on a table, an everyday arrangement of objects. Still life was a typical motif for the Cubists, and Gris, a Spanish painter who worked mostly in France, approached it in that spirit. The painting is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
On your wall: Its still-life subject and Cubist structure suit a study, living room or hallway where a modern, abstract piece can sit comfortably beside more traditional furnishings.

Juan Gris was the name used by José Victoriano González-Pérez, a Spanish painter born in Madrid. He spent most of his working life in France. He was closely associated with Cubism, the inventive artistic movement, and his paintings are counted among its most distinctive.
