Painted in 1906 by André Derain, The Pool of London is an oil on canvas cityscape of the busy stretch of the Thames in London. It belongs to Fauvism, the movement Derain helped found with Henri Matisse, which is known for bold, heightened colour. Derain's work of these years is marked by that vivid approach, and it gives the river scene a lively, modern feel. The painting is now in the Tate collection, presented by the Trustees of the Chantrey Bequest in 1951.
On your wall: Its bold Fauvist colour and river subject suit a living room, study or hallway that would welcome a lively, modern focal point.

André Derain was a French painter and sculptor who co-founded Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His work from 1905 to 1906 is known for its bold, exuberant colour. By 1910 his style had grown more restrained, shaped by his study of Cézanne and the old masters. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order.
