Wassily Kandinsky, 1926
A black ground, a red vertical band and a scatter of crescents, triangles and circles: Kandinsky's 1926 Christmas gift in geometric form.
No VAT charged. Free delivery in Switzerland from CHF 99. Delivery details
Painted in 1926, this abstract composition sets geometric forms against a deep black ground. A red vertical band, patterned with crescents and small circles, anchors the picture, while triangles and diagonal bars move around it. A cross-like figure topped by a circle adds another note. Kandinsky made it in oil on cardboard, and the title, To Nina for Christmas, marks it as a seasonal dedication. It now belongs to the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne.
On your wall: The strong red against black suits a living room, study or hallway where a bold, graphic piece can anchor a modern or minimalist scheme.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
