Painted in oil on canvas between 1912 and 1913, this large Cubist work by Albert Gleizes shows rugby players in blue and striped jerseys, one of them holding an oval ball. Around them, buildings, smoke and a bridge are broken into fragments, so the figures and the setting seem to merge into one busy, shifting scene. The painting measures about 225 by 183 cm and is signed at the lower left. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Gleizes was a French artist and a writer on Cubism, and this work shows his interest in movement and modern subjects.
On your wall: Its energetic, fragmented composition and bold blues would suit a living room, study or stairwell where a modern, graphic piece can hold the space.

With Jean Metzinger he wrote Du "Cubisme" in 1912, the first major treatise on the movement. He belonged to the Section d'Or, spent four important years in New York, and helped introduce Americans to modern art.
