This oil painting on canvas dates from 1910 and shows a mountain landscape with a church, as the title tells us. The Murnau name in its full title links it to a place Kandinsky painted. It is now in the Lenbachhaus, which holds the work in its collection. Kandinsky began painting studies at thirty and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, which makes a landscape from this year of particular interest to anyone who enjoys watching a painter's vision develop.
On your wall: Its mountain-and-church subject and painterly, modern character suit a living room, study or hallway where you want a landscape with an abstract edge.
