Painted in oil in 1911, this work by August Macke shows Native Americans on horses, set within a landscape. Macke was a German Expressionist, and he made it at a time when Cubism was influencing his approach. He had joined Der Blaue Reiter through his friend Franz Marc. The painting belongs to the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich, where it arrived in 1965 as a gift from the Bernhard and Elly Koehler Foundation.
On your wall: With its riders and landscape in a modern, abstract spirit, it would suit a living room, study or hallway where you want a touch of early twentieth-century movement.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
