About this artwork

August Macke painted this work in 1913 in oil on canvas. As the title tells us, it shows three girls wearing yellow straw hats, and the hats give the picture its name and its warm note of colour. Macke was a German Expressionist and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. He worked at a time when new movements were appearing across Europe, and he took from the avant-garde whatever interested him most. The painting is held today by the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.

On your wall: The warm yellows and the gentle figure subject suit living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and sit well in modern interiors that welcome a little colour.

About August Macke

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
