About this artwork

This is the living room of Matisse's home in Issy-les-Moulineaux, with his younger son, Pierre, seated at the piano. Two of the artist's own works appear in the room: the sculpture Decorative Figure at bottom left and the painting Woman on a High Stool at upper right. Matisse began with a naturalistic drawing, then removed detail as he worked, scraping areas down and rebuilding them as broad planes of colour. A triangle of shadow falls across the boy's face, echoed by a green triangle of light on the garden, suggesting light switched on in fading daylight. Incised lines on the window frame and stippling on the left give the surface a pitted look, while the metronome and burning candle on the piano point to the passing of time.

On your wall: Its bold planes of colour and geometric shapes suit living rooms, studies and music corners, where a modern, thoughtful picture can anchor the space.
