Improvisation 21A was painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1911, in oil on canvas. The title points to the spontaneous, musical approach he took to composing with colour and form, and the work sits within the abstract direction for which he is widely known. Kandinsky was born in Moscow, came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty, and worked in Germany. The painting belongs to the Lenbachhaus collection.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern living rooms, studies and open-plan spaces where a single expressive piece can bring energy and become a focus for conversation.
