About this artwork

Kandinsky painted this landscape in 1909, taking Murnau as his subject. The title points to a railway and a castle, and a locomotive appears among the elements of the view. It is made in oil paint on cardboard, a modest support that gives the work an immediate, hands-on feel. Kandinsky is widely seen as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and a landscape from this year is a good place to see how he approached a familiar subject. The painting is held in the Lenbachhaus.

On your wall: It suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a modern landscape with a hint of abstraction can add a focal point.
