About this artwork

Painted in 1892 by Henri Rousseau, A Centennial of Independence is a history painting in the naïve style, a manner closely linked with the artist. The title points to a celebration of a hundred years of independence, and the picture invites you to consider it as a commemorative scene. It is made in oil paint on canvas and is held today in the J. Paul Getty Museum, at the Getty Center. Rousseau, known as Le Douanier, took up painting seriously in his early forties, and this work belongs to the years when he was building his practice.

On your wall: Its naïve character and commemorative subject suit a living room, hallway or study where you would like a picture with a quiet sense of occasion.

About Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
