Henri Rousseau painted The Waterfall in 1910, in oil on canvas. It is a landscape, and the title tells us the cascading water is its subject. The work belongs to naïve art, the approach with which Rousseau is associated. He was a French painter who came to painting seriously in his early forties and later left his job as a tax collector to devote himself fully to his art. Today The Waterfall is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: A landscape of this kind suits living rooms, studies and hallways, where a scene of water and nature can bring a calm, characterful focal point to the wall.

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
