About this artwork

Painted in 1897 by Henri Rousseau, this oil on canvas belongs to naïve art and mixes landscape with a figure scene. A lion stands over a sleeping woman in a moonlit desert, and the mood is quiet, fantastical and suspended. Rousseau was a French painter who began painting seriously in his early forties and later left his job as a toll and tax collector to work on his art full-time. The picture is now at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, given by Olga Guggenheim in 1939.

On your wall: With its moonlit desert and simple, bold forms, it suits living rooms, studies and bedrooms where a calm, imaginative focal point is welcome.

About Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
