About this artwork

Painted in 1907, this work by Henri Rousseau is a group portrait whose title tells its story: the representatives of foreign powers come to greet the Republic as a sign of peace. Rousseau made it in oil on canvas, in the naïve manner for which he is known. The painting belongs to the collection of the Musée Picasso. Rousseau, also nicknamed Le Douanier, began painting seriously in his early forties and later left his work as a tax collector to paint full-time. Here, that direct, unschooled approach is turned to a ceremonial theme of welcome and goodwill.

On your wall: Its theme of gathering and peace suits a living room, study or hallway where a thoughtful, characterful piece can start conversation, especially in modern interiors that welcome a naïve touch.

About Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
