Wassily Kandinsky, 1908
A view from a window in Murnau, painted by Kandinsky in 1908 in oil on canvas. It is a quiet glimpse of a place seen from inside.

Painted in 1908, this work looks out from the window of the Griesbräu in Murnau. The title sets the scene: we are standing indoors, looking outwards, as if sharing the painter's own vantage point. Kandinsky made it in oil paint on canvas. Today it belongs to the Lenbachhaus collection, where it is also kept. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, so it is interesting to see a work from this period, painted before the abstraction he became known for.
On your wall: A good fit for living rooms, studies or hallways where a modern, painterly view adds depth and a sense of looking beyond the wall.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
