Matisse painted this scene of a woman reclining in a loose white blouse and bright red harem trousers. She lies on a pink chaise, with blue and floral patterned hangings behind her and a small table with a still life beside her. The work is oil on canvas and dated 1924–1925. Red, pink and blue sit close together, and the patterned surfaces make the whole room feel lively and decorative. It belongs to the tradition of the odalisque, a subject Matisse returned to in his work.
On your wall: Its warm reds and pinks against blue suit a living room, bedroom or reading corner where you want a lively, colourful focal point.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, best known as a painter, though he also worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His art is admired for its bold use of colour and for a fluid, original approach to drawing. Both qualities give his work a distinctive character that remains easy to recognise.
