Painted in 1906, Breton Landscape is an oil painting on canvas and belongs to the tradition of landscape painting. Its title points to the countryside of Brittany as the subject. Robert Delaunay went on to co-found Orphism with Sonia Delaunay and others, and his later work moved towards abstraction, with strong colour and geometric shapes. Seen alongside that path, this earlier landscape offers a quieter starting point, where a natural view is the focus.
On your wall: A landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where you want a calm natural view with some modern art history behind it.

Robert Delaunay was a French artist associated with the School of Paris. Together with his wife, Sonia Delaunay, and others, he co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. His work shows a bold handling of colour and a clear delight in experimenting with depth and tone, and his later paintings grew more abstract.
