Rhythm dates from 1932 and is by Robert Delaunay, a French artist of the School of Paris. He co-founded Orphism with his wife Sonia Delaunay and others, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. This work combines gouache, ink and watercolour. Delaunay's later work leaned towards abstraction, and he was known for bold colour and a love of experimenting with depth and tone. The title points to movement and pulse, something to bear in mind as you look.
On your wall: Its abstract, colour-led character suits modern living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a lively piece can bring energy to a plain wall.
