About this artwork

Painted in 1884, this oil landscape on canvas follows two figures as they walk along a dirt path towards a forest. A small pond sits to the right of the path, and trees gather ahead of the walkers. It is a quiet outdoor scene set in Norway, built around the simple idea of a journey on foot. The path leads the eye from the foreground into the trees, giving the picture a calm sense of movement and depth. The work is held in a private collection.

On your wall: Its path, trees and pond suit calm spaces such as hallways, living rooms and bedrooms, especially where a natural, quietly modern landscape is wanted.
