Edvard Munch, 1896
A solitary figure sits by the water's edge, rendered in simplified shapes and dark tones that give this 1896 woodcut a quiet, brooding presence.

Munch made this hand-coloured woodcut in 1896. It shows his friend, the art critic Jappe Nilssen, on the shore at Åsgårdstrand, a fishing village south of Oslo. Nilssen is portrayed as jilted and tormented. Munch chose heavily grained wood and let the pattern of the board show through as texture. He carved the blocks roughly, embracing the handmade nature of the technique. Each impression is unique: he printed in black ink, then coloured the sheet extensively with watercolour and gouache. The simplified shapes, flattened space and dark hues mirror the figure's deep low spirits, so the method carries the meaning.
On your wall: Its dark, muted tones and flattened forms suit a study, reading corner or bedroom, and sit well in modern interiors that favour contemplative, understated art.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best-known work, The Scream, dates from 1893 and has become one of the most recognised and admired images in Western art. If you are drawn to bold, expressive pictures that stay in the memory, his work is a rewarding place to begin.
