About this artwork

Painted in 1915, this is number 7 from Hilma af Klint's Group IX/SUW, a series titled The Swan. Af Klint was a Swedish artist whose paintings are considered among the first major abstract works in Western art, and a good deal of her output came before the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She was also a mystic, and belonged to The Five, a circle of women inspired by Theosophy. Her paintings often resemble diagrams and were conceived as visual expressions of complex spiritual ideas, which gives her work a quiet sense of purpose alongside its abstraction.

On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors such as living rooms, studies and calm hallways, where it can give a thoughtful focal point to a wall.
