About this artwork

Hilma af Klint painted this work in 1907 as the fifth in a sequence called The Ten Largest, and it is titled Adulthood. She used oil paint and tempera on paper. It is held today by the Hilma af Klint Foundation. Af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic, and her paintings are counted among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Her art often gave visual form to complex spiritual ideas, and some of her pictures resemble diagrams. Much of her work was made before the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian.

On your wall: A good choice for living rooms, studies or hallways where you want a modern, abstract piece that gives visitors something to talk about.

Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
