About this artwork

Adulthood is the seventh painting in The Ten Largest, a series by Hilma af Klint made in 1907. The title places it among stages of a human life, and it is an abstract work rather than a depiction of people or places. It was made with oil paint and tempera on paper, and it is held today by the Hilma af Klint Foundation. Af Klint was a Swedish artist whose abstract paintings are counted among the earliest major examples in Western art. She was also deeply interested in spiritual ideas, and her work often reflects that curiosity.

On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern living rooms, studies and hallways, where a considered, thought-provoking piece can anchor a wall and sit well with contemporary or minimal interiors.

About Hilma af Klint

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
