This is a drypoint by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, dated 1902. The title tells us it belongs to a group of works connected with Max Linde's house, and that this one is of Theodor Linde. Drypoint is a printmaking technique in which lines are scratched straight into a plate, and the result is often a soft, slightly velvety line. It suits a portrait of this kind, where the focus rests on the figure. The original print is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection.
On your wall: Its linear, understated character suits studies, hallways, bedrooms and calm living spaces, especially where a modern, uncluttered look is wanted.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best-known work, The Scream, dates from 1893 and has become one of the most recognised and admired images in Western art. If you are drawn to bold, expressive pictures that stay in the memory, his work is a rewarding place to begin.
