About this artwork

Marsden Hartley painted Lobster Fishermen in 1940–41, in oil on hardboard. It shows men gathered on a wharf with their lobster traps, in the small coastal town of Corea, Maine, where he had moved in 1940. Lobstering there was still a way of life, though a hard one. By then Hartley had spent several years turning his attention to his home state, and he chose a self-consciously "primitive" style, influenced by the popularity of folk art. The painting is part of his Maine Series, and it presents the men and their surroundings as closely bound together, with people and nature belonging to one another.

On your wall: Its plain, strongly drawn coastal scene suits living rooms, studies and hallways, and works especially well in homes with a modern look or a liking for the sea.
