Marsden Hartley painted Movement, Bermuda in 1916. The title points to a sense of motion and to a connection with Bermuda, and it invites you to look at how the picture is put together rather than to search for a literal scene. Hartley was an American Modernist who worked as a painter, poet and essayist, and this painting sits within that body of work. It is now part of the Barnes Foundation collection. Let the title guide you, then see what shapes and rhythms you find.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits living rooms, studies and open-plan spaces where a considered, contemporary piece can anchor the wall.

Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist who worked as a painter, poet and essayist. He developed his skills as a painter by studying the work of Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin, and that experience shaped his approach to the canvas. His writing sat alongside his painting as part of a wide-ranging creative life.
