Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1918
A swift, energetic ink drawing of fir trees and mountains, seen from within the alpine landscape around Davos.

Kirchner made this drawing in 1918/19, sweeping black ink over graphite with a brush. He had settled near Davos, Switzerland, after leaving military service following a breakdown in 1915, and the alpine setting gave his work a new focus. It came to stand for his spiritual renewal. Rather than looking down from above, he places us inside the mountain range, which gives the scene a personal, immersive feel. The vigorous marks fill the landscape with energy.
On your wall: Its black-and-white drawn lines suit studies, living rooms and hallways, especially where a lively, graphic piece is wanted against calm walls.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was among the founders of Die Brücke, or "The Bridge", a group that helped lead the way to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. After a breakdown during the First World War he left army service. In 1937 the Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", and over 600 pieces were sold or destroyed.
